Alamo Stadium and Convocation Center
Client: San Antonio Independent School District
Description
As a sub-consultant, UNINTECH provided structural engineering services to the San Antonio Independent School district for various renovations.
Alamo Stadium
Built in 1940, the Alamo Stadium is now designated as a state historic landmark. This renovation project involved the enlargement of the playing field to FIFA regulations along with an eight-lane track, which required the demolition of some lower seats. UNINTECH designed the new press box on the east side (approximately 3,200 sq.ft.); ADA seating at upper concourse and lower bowl; new field lighting structural support; east side concourse foundations and ramps; and new north side locker room building (approximately 10,000 sq.ft.). The rock wall was retrofitted to meet current design standards. The Associated Builders & Contractors – South Texas Chapter presented UNINTECH with the 2014 ABC – Excellence in Construction Award for the Alamo Stadium historical renovation and additions.
Convocation Center
The interior of the Convocation Center was entirely renovated, including ADA compliant seating areas. Our engineers conducted a forensic investigation, which included multiple site inspections, measurements of the concrete framing, masonry walls, and steel roof trusses. A report was prepared with recommendations to retrofit the building to meet current building codes. Our engineers provided structural design of the renovated portions of the building. UNINTECH designed ADA seating at north side floor level; elevated slab at south side concourse; and new link building (approximately 15,300 sq. ft.). The challenge of this project was the adaptation of the design to unknown foundation structure and the structural modifications on a nearly 75 year old building, which was built with construction materials no longer in use. The project was entirely developed using Revit.
